  • Lemmings are small rodents found in and around the Arctic.
  • They have a round shape with soft hair, short legs and small ears.
  • Lemmings grow to around 16 cm (6.3 in) in length and weigh around 28 g (1 oz).
  • Lemmings are herbivores, eating grass, leaves, berries, and other vegetation.
  • They remain active in the cold winter, burrowing through snow for food.
  • Lemmings can act aggressively when threatened in a warning display that may help them avoid danger.
  • Birds of prey such as snowy owls are predators of lemmings.
  • There are many different types of lemmings, such as the West Siberian lemming, Norway lemming, wood lemming, northern bog lemming and steppe lemming.
  • Due to their unique genetics, wood lemmings give birth to around three times more female offspring than males.
  • A popular myth states that lemmings follow each other to their deaths, jumping off cliffs without thought. This is partly due to a 1958 documentary (White Wilderness) in which lemmings were tragically thrown off a cliff by producers in order to fake the scenes.
